There's not much I could say without spoiling it, but I loved it. This movie rocks, and though it's full of gut-busting dark humour and enough action to keep you stoked, it is nevertheless pimarily a love story.
But don't let that scare you away. There is no typical Will Smith goofiness like the in ID (dragging the alien) and I, Robot (talking to the cat), helps tremendously. Though his character is an asshole, he's likeable; his cynicism and deadpan/ ironic humour suits him and the movie well. Jason Bateman gives a more than credible performance, and Charlize Theron, in addition to being a wonderful actress, is smokin' hot.
What do y'all think?

Fri, July 4, 2008 - 8:26 AMSaw it yesterday. Loved it, too. A bit more "realistic" superhero movie - it doesn't have that comic book ambiance. And yes, Charlize is steaming - had my popcorn popping a second time.

Re: Hancock
Fri, July 4, 2008 - 8:50 PMWill Smith wasn't his usual self. That was a treat. Sort of felt he was channeling Samuel Jackson. I liked it too. Anyone sense a sequel? I hope not. -

Re: Hancock
Fri, July 4, 2008 - 11:17 PMPlease, no sequel. Some movies really just need to be left to stand on their own, no?
By the way, I noticed a trailer for the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," with Keanu Reeves. -

Well, there you have it; nothing is sacred (and there is no creativity - or originality in Hollywood).

Re: Hancock
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 11:41 AMThe creators seem intelligent enough to do a good sequel and hopeful are smart enough not to do a stupid one. I wouldn't dismiss it off hand.
But we saw "The Day the Earth Stood Still" preview as well and we're pretty depressed. It was clear there were significant plot changes. -

Re: Hancock
Sun, July 6, 2008 - 6:19 AMI liked it, thought it was an ok/decent movie
I was surprised at the "other" story in the Movie....not to give anything a way to those who have nor seen it yet.....
The previews make it look like all the movie is about is a guy with serious selfworth issues and who has super powers to boot.....but there was much more to it all
So, yes, I give it a moderate "Thumbs Up"
(So fare this summer? I would say that my list of movies I have really enjoyed so far are....Iron Man, Incredilble Hulk, Indiana Jones and Hancock...unfortunately Speed Racer was a BIG disappointment!)
Oh and yeah!
I too saw the preview of the remake of "Day The Earth Stood Still"
Man!! Does that look like it is going to suck MAJOR Donkey Balls or what!?!?! (Can't believe that one of my all time favorite Sci Fi Movies as a kid is going to be ruined by a shitty remake like this one....grrrrrrr) -

Thu, July 24, 2008 - 11:23 AMHancock was very nicely done. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I saw it, even if I am something of a non-theist. -

Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:19 PMI think it's obvious and plainly stated.
But I do not think it's a "pro-religion" movie. -

How do you mean? All I remember is
that he was an ancient god, then he gets
a female counterpart. It doesn't really explain
why they exist. But the fact that they are more
powerful farther apart makes some sense.
Don't you agree? And it can be explained.
But I won't bother. I just wanted to see if it
made gut sense to people who saw the movie.
If it made gut sense, then I'm happy.

Re: Hancock
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 10:31 PMAnd it's not about any real religion.
He thinks he is the only one.
Then she rips shit apart.
She is his 'opposite', if only sexually.
Really that's as deep as such movies can go... -

Re: Hancock
Fri, October 3, 2008 - 1:38 AMSo is it cool to explore what it meant by now?
I find it funny that they only have powers when they are away from each other.
And the amnesia part. And the sobering up part. I walked out of the theatre
thinking "bullshit", but after more subtle reflection....
Funny to find it in the popular culture now too... exhibited in this movie.

Sat, July 26, 2008 - 3:50 PMi liked hancock, but i expected to like it. i like will smith and i like superhero movies. it had some good twists and some really good laughs. -

Re: Hancock
Thu, October 16, 2008 - 9:31 AMI agree....this was a very underrated movie (partly due to it coming out right around when Iron Man and Dark Knight came out)
but hey - I've always been a fan of Will Smith -

Re: Hancock
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 10:03 AMI just caught this last week -- very much worth seeing, especially for it's amazing first half, which is sort of like Superman meets Bad Santa. Will Smith gives a much richer performance than one might expect, and there were gags that are just hilarious, like the whale rescue. (!)
The second half takes a wrong turn into the serious, and there's just not enough there in this story to support it. But it still ends fairly well -- the good parts are SO good, and the less interesting parts are merely mediocre.
Thumbs up from the Film Curmudgeon.
PS This film is about as theistic in its implications as Howard the Duck.
