What great performances with an excellent script. Well worth a look, without a gun or explosion in site.

Re: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012)
Mon, June 18, 2012 - 7:28 PMI gave this 5/5 stars on RT. Review Below:
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (TBEMH) may not be an original story, but it is definitely a good one. Like most films released nowadays it is based upon a book and though I cannot speak to its authenticity and the quality of novelic adaptation, I can speak to its quality as a stand alone film and of that it is a quality film with strong characters, superb acting and just the right amount of heart-string pulling that you do not get overwhelmed; or leave the theater feeling emotionally neglected. The only shortcomings of this film may be the overabundance of information thrown at you in the first fifteen minutes or so. However, if you are not afraid of a little character development, you'll do just fine.
It is refreshing for me to find a film with rich characters and smart storytelling that, perhaps I am being overindulgent in giving this five stars. However, with a shortage of quality character driven film these days, it is encouraging to see there are companies still willing to put a story out there and not just titties and explosions. Don't get me wrong, I love a half-naked female assassin blowing up buildings just as much as the next person (I guess) but I like rich and thorough characters and plot too. And especially with with the summer months ahead of us, character and plot all too often suffer.
At just about two hours the film feels nicely completed and not annoyingly so. Though you are not surprised by the paths these lives these people take along the way, you are not insulted by it by its simplicity or a heavy-handed delivery. Though I am a 31 (on the cusp of becoming 32!) year old woman, and likely the youngest one in the theater, I really liked this movie and do not see why the age of the viewer would restrict appreciation of this film. What would keep you from enjoying it is a lack of exposure to some of the issues these characters experience. No, I have not fallen and broken a hip, but I have spent a number of years with people who have. I have been around those in the last years of their lives, their "golden" years, and appreciated the humor and heartbreak that the characters (and actors themselves I imagine) experience as they age. And we will all age hopefully. And hopefully, I can find myself a nice place like this to live the rest of my days when I reach that point.
But not yet. :)
