This thread is only for people who have seen the film since I wanted to discuss the ending.
OK, I liked the film. Very Old School Raimi, but
!!!SPOILER!!!
I thought the ending was a little too obvious. On the one hand, given the structure of the film, it wouldn't have been a tremendous surprise if a number of people got the button. But, II was surprised that she didn't give the button to her boyfriend. It would have been disturbing and tragic. He's been fully supportive of her, he loves her, is about to ask her to marry him, but in that final moment of despsration, she talks him into keeping the button to avoid being dragged to hell, scared shitless after all she experienced.
Thoughts?

Re: Drag Me to Hell - SPOILER thread
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 11:22 PMI was there for Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn on opening day. 6pm show at the weird little theaters in Westwood where Whole Foods is now.
I saw possibly the best movie ever made that night!
Since then Raimi has been a stead disappointment. He peaked.
This film was a lot of fun, and is definitely his best since EDII:DBD.
The one element I get frustrated by in his films is his depiction of inevitable series of events that lead to a downfall. This may be a good thing, but it is not an enjoyable one - and I, my friends, have sat through many different kinds of uncomfortable at the movies.
It was there in Simple Plan and it's in this movie too.
I like the way the Coen Bros. do it better.
But yes, I'm glad there's a decent horror movie out there.

Thu, June 25, 2009 - 1:56 PMThat's a good point Ron, and entirely plausible given her conflicting morality (sparing Ron but not so much kitty). Woulda made for a great sequel too. -

Re: Drag Me to Hell - SPOILER thread
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 9:29 PMIt would also have accentuated the foreshadowing earlier when the psychic said that "you would be surprised what you would do" to save your soul. Killing kitty is one thing, but sending your boyfriend to Hell, especially after he's been there for you?
Hadn't thought of the sequel possibilities. It would have made for an interesting character. On the one hand, assuming she's tormented again, there would be a conflict between wanting her to defeat the demon versus harboring antipathy for her given what she did to her boyfriend. -

Wed, July 22, 2009 - 4:49 PM*** SPOILERS *** like you didn't know
I could see the false happy ending from a mile off. It was telegraphed by the big Blue Velvet smiles and happy music (the first non-disturbing score in the film). All that was missing was a robin landing on her shoulder and singing.
But I didn't mind because
1) The details of how her plan went wrong were ingenious. The coin/button confusion was a great device -- as soon as it came out you knew you'd been had.
2) The final scene was delivered with such gusto that it was still thrilling and dramatically effective, and disturbing. -

Wed, July 22, 2009 - 4:54 PMSpeaking of the button/coin confusion, that was a great extension of the social commentary in the film.
The loan officer gets left holding the bag at the end despite her best efforts to unload her "toxic asset", and she has to bear the weight of the whole calamity, even though she only participated in creating it a little bit.
The film stands fine on its own without that subtext, but I like that it's in there and that it works fairly well. Confusing her cursed token with a coin just drives that connection home all the more. -

Thu, July 23, 2009 - 2:04 PMI plead dumb --- I didn't see it at all, although it was obvious in retrospect.

Re: Drag Me to Hell - SPOILER thread
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 10:50 AMI did from the moment she picked up the envelope in the car but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the film. In fact it increased my suspense because she was doing all that hard work and I just wanted to shout "Look in the envelope!!" you're gonna run outta time!
I added a great pic of the gypsy woman in the photo section awhile back but couldn't figure out how to make it the default pic. Must have to be a mod or tribe owner. -

Sun, July 26, 2009 - 9:49 PMThe point that she dropped the envelope and couldn't find it initially screamed to me that it was substituted somehow
