A Mandate Pictures/Mr. Mudd Production
Lianne Halfon, Mason Novick and Russell Smith, Producers

3. “Michael Clayton” (Warner Bros.)
A Clayton Productions, LLC Production
Sydney Pollack, Jennifer Fox and Kerry Orent, Producers

4. “No Country for Old Men” (Miramax and Paramount Vantage)
A Scott Rudin/Mike Zoss Production

5. “There Will Be Blood” (Paramount Vantage and Miramax)

Wow, I am really out of it. I haven't seen any of these. And I've heard of only two. Guess I better go back into my cave.

Make sure you pack enough for two, my friend.

And you call yourselves Movie Whores!

I think it will go to either Atonement or No Country For Old Men, with No Country a likely win. Michael Clayton and Juno are too modest in scope to catch the Academy's attention, and There Will Be Blood is too jarring and weird to seize the day.

All five of these films are excellent, and for the first time in my memory I wouldn't be too disappointed if any of them won. Well, I guess I'd be a little let down if Michael Clayton won - it's a fine film, but ultimately a pot-boiler.

If I had to pick the winner myself, I'd agonize, but probably go with There Will Be Blood. It was uneven, while Atonement and No Country were both perfect. But when it worked it reached heights of intensity that matched Stanley Kubrick's best work.

Then again, it would be all right if the movie that snags Best Actor, also ends up snagging the award for Best Picture. One thing I know that the chances will be slim for the Coen Brothers walking away with it, because the Oscars doesn't always recognise eccentric work.

Yeah, but sometimes they pick dark, complex films, like Unforgiven. Seems POSSIBLE to me, and I think the Academy also likes to award artists who have it coming, and the Coen brothers certainly have one coming for Best Picture.

You ahve a point there, and I'm not disputing that those brothers don't deserve it. but you know how those Oscar guys tend to reason sometimes, as if they're scared to award Directors who're forever pushing the envelope when it comes to excelence in movie-making. They never gave one to Stanley Kubrick or Altman for christ's sake. And look at how long it took before they remembered Scorsese.

All five are good, but I think Juno and Michael Clayton are a step below the rest.

My nod goes to No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood. Both movies had me thinking about them for days after seeing them. Something about them really grabbed me.

I thought Cloverfield was gonna take it, but Oscar has spoken and everything's coming up Cohen.

Of all the nominees, I've only seen No Country and it was kinda disappointing, except for the acting and cinematography which I loved but not enough to make me understand all its critical acclaim. I've heard nothing but good things about Juno. However it reminds me of last year's nomination for Little Miss Sunshine. Now I love indie, low budget dramas and comedies and Little Miss Sunshine was a good one, but it sure as hell didn't ring Oscar to me while I was watching it, at least not Best Picture. I get the same feeling with Juno, but hopefully I'll get to watch it soon so I can make a qualified judgment.

It's going to go to No Country, but I don't think a film with an ending that unfocused diserves it. But who cares what I say, my film choice wasn't nominated.

There Will Be Blood is all about Daniel Day Lewis' performance and he'll win for it.

Atonement (haven't seen it) is a candidate, but there's a pretty big backlash.

Juno's reward is that it's made as much money as it has.

Michael Clayton (haven't seen it) is just lucky to be here.
