A welcome, provocative and thinking person's revenge flick with quite a bit of sexual politics going on. Leave it to a brit to nail this one.
A bit muddy perhaps, but these days what movie isn't?
I think the connies are going to have a hard time putting this one in their pipe to smoke.

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 8:42 AMI was hoping someone would get around to seeing this. It's on my short list. Not quite a remake of Ms .45 eh?

Re: The Brave One
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:16 PMDeath Wish with Estrogen. There is still plenty of testosterone in this film though and that could be an interesting place to approach a reading of it.
The Es are split - Ebert gave it an A- minus, and his scant review is worth a read after you see the film.
E! hated it. Figures cause I hate E! more than I hate life itself. In fact, E! is everything I hate about life.
Anyway, if you're a fan of the revenge genre you might not like it. I'm not a fan of the revenge genre but a proponent of a discourse about the revenge drama and this is a must see, like Mystic River (directed by Dirty Harry!). -

Re: The Brave One
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 1:24 PMWell I LOVED Mystic River (Laura Linney was the real gangster) and copuld care less about happy endings so these are all selling points for me. And besides, i adore Foster.

Thu, September 20, 2007 - 2:18 AMAll I can say is... man, that Jodie Foster can ACT! The camerawork was nice too. Great movie, definitely worth an Oscar nod for Jodie. -

the pace was perfect with just enough breathing space.

Re: The Brave One
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 9:46 AMI have to agree with AA here though I wouldnt take the star away. The story was a little telegraphed and the ending was very sam goldwyn but I really liked terrence howard's character and as I've said before Foster can pretty nearly do no wrong by me. One little snippet I found disturbing and beautiful was the transitions between the erotic movements of she and her fiancee and the same disassociated parts moving in the E.R. Very well done. I liked the emphasis on trauma changing the psyche of a person permanently. It's definitely true and too often skimmed over as if retribution somehow puts everything back in place. It doesnt. -

Re: The Brave One
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 9:01 PMRetribution or revenge can never put things back in their place. But it can put some mother fucker in their place. It can prevent it from happening again. If someone kills someone whether it is someone I love or a total stranger, if I am witness to it I will take care of biznatch. I wont feel guilt. I wont allow myself to think that the system of law will make sure true justice is served. Whomever commits these crimes probably has before and will again. I will end it if I have the opportunity. Not a problem. What's the option? Allow someone to continue torturing and killing people without acting. To rely on corrupt red tape bureaucrats to do whatever they do and ............... Dont even get me started. The families and friends of people that have been murdered may or may not agree with my views. I feel very strongly about taking true justice into your own hands. Just like in the wild wild west of the old days.
I know my statements may be constroversial. I'm open to changing my mind but for now this is truly how I feel.
And no I still havent seen the movie yet but know for certain I will at some point. I just called my friend Kate as I'm posting this and we might go see it this weekend. Yay. -

Re: The Brave One
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 8:42 AMI take it you've tried both angles and found direct retribution for murder more fulfilling then? -

Re: The Brave One
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 8:43 PMI have only killed with the power of the mind. Nothing hands on. Although I'm sure that could be very satifying in some cases. Are you hoping for a confession?
I have never killed anyone YET. I made a statement I stand behind. If someone killed someone I love I would like to think I would feel no prob with it. That's not saying I would enjoy it. Just that I am perfectly willing to take true justice into my own hands if need be.
And no I dont think I have seen Mystic River Pink thought have heard of it and understand it supposed to be very good.
