I know it's not a movie, but there are a bunch of cable shows which feel to me more like long form cinema than television. Another obvious example is the outstanding "Mad Men".
I just learned about True Blood as it starts its second season and I've been working my way through the first season. So far it's everything you would expect from a series created by Alan Ball ("Six Feet Under"), starring Anna Paquin, about vampires. It's racy, dark, and intriguing. It's at its best when it sticks close to its characters and feels a bit ham-fisted when it goes for obvious social allegory a la the incredibly-overrated "Battlestar Galactica".
If you might be interested in a sexy, violent character drama about vampires, this is as good as you're likely to get.

Mon, June 22, 2009 - 10:08 PMYou'll be happy to know that season two seems to be veering away from the sociopolitical commentary and focusing more on the character's interplay. Though Jason's path is definitely cut from the plight of the pious.
Good call on Mad men. It's suplanted my title of 'Best Show No one's Ever Seen' from the incredibly well written The Wire. Mad men is written by the same people who did Sopranos but without the quirky character studies. The subtleties and depth of the people in this show are amazing. -

Tue, June 23, 2009 - 10:21 AMWord is born. Mad Men may be my number one show of all time, up there with the completely different "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". They're kind of apples and oranges but I love them both.
