I used to call this film the comfort film. It's the movie you have seen a million times and don't hesitate on watching when it's on re-runs on TV/cable.... or if you want to go to sleep to sound.. you'll put THIS film on.

I realized that GO was one of those films that i've seen millions of times and still have no problem watching over again. It never threatens to make me insane.... no... it's comforting. I wouldn't say Go, with Katie Holmes is a great film... but it's a reluctant favorite.

Have any films like that... list em.

  • Excellent topic.

Comfort films, including some guilty pleasures; movies I can have playing all day in the background – like listening to a favorite album:
I know it might be sacrilegious, but I will have these playing while I may be doing other things; paying bills, cleaning house / chores or even Tribing. I just get a kick out of certain parts or sections of dialogues or the sound tracks.
And please note, that this list does not necessarily contain my all time favorite films – some of which don’t fit my “comfort” criteria and others that I hold in too lofty esteem to have playing and not watching devotedly (which at 2nd thought seems a bit odd).
Or, maybe it is that these tend to be no-brainer – easy listening flicks.

From my personal top 100 list – mostly alphabetical:

    Beetlejuice
    Day World Stood Still
    Die Hard
    Dragonslayer (81)
    Duck Soup
    Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    The Fifth Element
    Flash Gordon (80’)
    The Fog
    From Russia with Love
    Harvey
    High Fidelity
    Joe Versus the Volcano
    The Matrix
Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail
    Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Paint Your Wagon (how’s that for a guilty pleasure?)
    Pennies from Heaven
The Professional (goes from moments of warm fuzzies to climactic kick-ass – those guys don’t know who they are messing with - crescendos)
    Pumpkin Head
    The Searchers
    Stagecoach
    Soldier
    Strictly Ballroom
    Tank Girl
The Thin Man Goes Home (44’)
Touch of Evil (some nice complexities here)
    Tron
    Who Shot Roger Rabbit
    Wizard of Oz
    Young Frankenstein

    ------------------
Plus contributions from other Movie Tribers:
Gangste: The Usual Suspects (one of my top 100)
    Mr M: 12 Monkeys
    Cindy: Lost Boys; Dirty Harry
Quas..: Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter
    AverageA..: X-Men

I might also add: The Gods Must Be Crazy,

(Boy I sure wish I owned all of these – so I could actually play them whenever I wanted – all day long.)
