“The Sapphires is an inspirational tale set in the late ‘60s about a quartet of young, talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission, discovered and guided by a kind-hearted, soul-loving manager. Plucked from obscurity, the four spirited women with powerhouse voices - called The Sapphires - are given the opportunity to entertain American troops in Vietnam.”
I went to see this last night and really enjoyed it. It is an Aussie movie, apparently very well received at Cannes.
I really liked the characters and the music was great. It was a “feel good movie” against a subtext of racism, the Stolen Generation and the Vietnam war – but these were not really focused on, just used as plot devices. Some might criticize the movie for doing that, and while it could have been edgy, it gave that up for a focus on the individuals, family, friendship and the music
Worth seeing.
RT gives it 91% www.rottentomatoes.com/the_sa...s_2012/
IMDB 7.1 www.imdb.com/title/tt1673697/
