I like how he kept the stop motion animation rough - no cgi masking, sometimes characters don't move at all - which gave it a real Rankin and Bass appeal. Plus his direction for the production design is always impeccable.
I can't find the old thread for this one. I started this one last night and finished it tonight. WOW!!! What an excellent movie! Totally kick ass. I'm in total lust with whomever the actor is that plays Tuvias brother. He's handsome as hell. Tuvia is pretty fucking stoic himself. But besides their incredible handsomeness, I really like this movie. This is one I most definitely want to own now.

"Ninja Assassin follows Raizo (Rain), one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.

In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever. Raizo saves Mika from her attackers, but he knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated. Now, entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse through the streets of Europe, Raizo and Mika must trust one another if they hope to survive and finally bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan."

Blood Diamond - Excellent film. Leonardo Dicaprio is outstanding in this film, as is Djimon Hounsou.

Chaneling - Angelina Jolie is outstanding in this film. She portrays a woman who's son goes missing and the police give her back the wrong boy.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button - I loved this film. Beautiful to watch, great acting and dialogue. I want to watch it again.

Day the Earth Stood Still - I felt this was a film I could watch and clean the house at the same time.

House Bunny - This movie was much better than I anticipated Anna Faris is hilarious in this film. I adore her!

Marley & Me - This movie was too middle-aged, middle-crisis cheesy for me. I kept flipping away from it on the airplane.

Wanted - Fun action-packed movie. Light-hearted, but entertaining to watch.

Yes Man - I was not expecting much from this movie, but I really enjoyed it and laughed a lot.

Any suggestions?

Here are a few of my favorites...not *all* artsy-fartsy either.

Paprika

I remember one guy who did these great 'lo-fi' animation shorts. One was of dinosaurs. Another of mating bats. All black & white but very surreal and with a dark, kinda dry sense of absurd humor.

The Cosmic Eye with Dizzy Gillespie was good too.
http://www.amazon.com/Art-Jazz-Animation-Cosmic-Eye/dp/B00000I20B

Anyways, stuff like that.
One of the issues keeping this movie from moving forward has to do with a dispute between Peter S. After reading about Beagle's career and the lack of compensation, credit and treatment he has received over the years for his writing and creations, I really feel that we need to try to get help from as many fans as possible.
Yet another Iraq war movie. And thats pretty much where the similarity ends. About a bomb squad circa 2004, its listed as 'action adventure, drama, thriller' and rated out at 4.5 stars. That pretty much nails it. Character and plot development did a great job of hooking me within the first 20 minutes. A good amount of action without a lot of hollywood gloss. And among the best parts of this movie? Wait for it........ wait for it................ NO CONTRIVED POLITICAL STATEMENT!!!!!!!!!!! God i loved that! The soldiers were neither portrayed as uber tough guys with a requisite moment of feeling when their buddy dies, spurring them on to kill an entire town of bad guys, nor softy apologists. It was really quite refreshing. The camera work left me just really fucking grateful that i'm *here*.
Okay, I have started another Star Wars kick recently. I have the prequels on dvd (just recently purchased them...from the Goodwill no less). My copies of the original trilogy are on VHS. They are the "Special Edition"....remember? The ones which were digitally remastered and released back in the late 90's or thereabouts. They have been "cleaned up" and some addtional footage was added. However, they do not contain some of the extra stuff which is on the later revamps, such as said emo-blonde at the end of Return of the Jedi posing as Anakin.

Is it possible to get these, the early remastered version...on dvd somewhere?
Publicist: Patrick Swayze dies at 57

By CHRISTY LEMIRE (AP) – 26 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into moviegoers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. Swayze died in Los Angeles, Wolf said, but declined to give further details.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer. He kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. The show drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that. Swayze acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

"I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking," Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters in early 2009. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it."

C. Thomas Howell, who co-starred with Swayze in "The Outsiders," "Grandview U.S.A." and "Red Dawn", said: "I have always had a special place in my heart for Patrick. While I was fortunate enough to work with him in three films, it was our passion for horses that forged a friendship between us that I treasure to this day. Not only did we lose a fine actor today, I lost my older `Outsiders' brother."

Other celebrities used Twitter to express condolences, and "Dirty Dancing" was the top trending topic for a while Monday night, trailed by several other Swayze films.

Ashton Kutcher — whose wife, Demi Moore, co-starred with Swayze in "Ghost" — wrote: "RIP P Swayze." Kutcher also linked to a YouTube clip of the actor poking fun at himself in a classic "Saturday Night Live" sketch, in which he played a wannabe Chippendales dancer alongside the corpulent — and frighteningly shirtless — Chris Farley.

And Larry King wrote: "Patrick Swayze was a wonderful actor & a terrific guy. He put his heart in everything. He was an extraordinary fighter in his battle w Cancer." King added that he'd do a tribute to Swayze on his CNN program Tuesday night.

A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad-boy Johnny Castle in "Dirty Dancing." As the son of a choreographer who began his career in musical theater, he seemed a natural to play the role.

A coming-of-age romance starring Jennifer Grey as an idealistic young woman on vacation with her family and Swayze as the Catskills resort's sexy (and much older) dance instructor, the film made great use of both his grace on his feet and his muscular physique.

It became an international phenomenon in the summer of 1987, spawning albums, an Oscar-winning hit song in "(I've Had) the Time of My Life," stage productions and a sequel, 2004's "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights," in which he made a cameo.

Swayze performed and co-wrote a song on the soundtrack, the ballad "She's Like the Wind," inspired by his wife, Lisa Niemi. The film also gave him the chance to utter the now-classic line, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner."

Swayze followed that up with the 1989 action flick "Road House," in which he played a bouncer at a rowdy bar. But it was his performance in 1990's "Ghost" that showed his vulnerable, sensitive side. He starred as a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee (Moore) — with great frustration and longing — through a psychic played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Swayze said at the time that he fought for the role of Sam Wheat (director Jerry Zucker wanted Kevin Kline) but once he went in for an audition and read six scenes, he got it.

Why did he want the part so badly? "It made me cry four or five times," he said of Bruce Joel Rubin's Oscar-winning script in an AP interview.

"Ghost" provided yet another indelible musical moment: Swayze and Moore sensually molding pottery together to the strains of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." It also earned a best-picture nomination and a supporting-actress Oscar for Goldberg, who said she wouldn't have won if it weren't for Swayze.

"When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg said in March 2008 on the ABC daytime talk show "The View."

Swayze himself earned three Golden Globe nominations, for "Dirty Dancing," "Ghost" and 1995's "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," which further allowed him to toy with his masculine image. The role called for him to play a drag queen on a cross-country road trip alongside Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo.

His heartthrob status almost kept him from being considered for the role of Vida Boheme.

"I couldn't get seen on it because everyone viewed me as terminally heterosexually masculine-macho," he told the AP then. But he transformed himself so completely that when his screen test was sent to Steven Spielberg, whose Amblin pictures produced "To Wong Foo," Spielberg didn't recognize him.

Among his earlier films, Swayze was part of the star-studded lineup of up-and-comers in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 adaptation of S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders," alongside Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez and Diane Lane.

Other '80s films included "Red Dawn," "Grandview U.S.A." (for which he also provided choreography) and "Youngblood," once more with Lowe, as Canadian hockey teammates.

In the '90s, he made such eclectic films as "Point Break" (1991), in which he played the leader of a band of bank-robbing surfers, and the family Western "Tall Tale" (1995), in which he starred as Pecos Bill. He appeared on the cover of People magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991, but his career tapered off toward the end of the 1990s, when he also had stay in rehab for alcohol abuse. In 2001, he appeared in the cult favorite "Donnie Darko," and in 2003 he returned to the New York stage with "Chicago"; 2006 found him in the musical "Guys and Dolls" in London.

Swayze was born in 1952 in Houston, the son of Jesse Swayze and choreographer Patsy Swayze, whose films include "Urban Cowboy."

He played football but also was drawn to dance and theater, performing with the Feld, Joffrey and Harkness Ballets and appearing on Broadway as Danny Zuko in "Grease." But he turned to acting in 1978 after a series of injuries.

Within a couple years of moving to Los Angeles, he made his debut in the roller-disco movie "Skatetown, U.S.A." The eclectic cast included Scott Baio, Flip Wilson, Maureen McCormack and Billy Barty.

Off-screen, he was an avid conservationist who was moved by his time in Africa to shine a light on "man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws," he told the AP in 2004.

Swayze was married since 1975 to Niemi, a fellow dancer who took lessons with his mother; they met when he was 19 and she was 15. A licensed pilot, Niemi would fly her husband from Los Angeles to Northern California for treatment at Stanford University Medical Center.

It's a fabulous movie that deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. Don't be put off by the awful mouthful of a name. It's the rare movie that is only one quite entertaining -- there's not one dull minute in it -- but also has something to say about the real world.

The film carefully reconstructs the fortunes of an actual Red Army Faction leftist cell in Germany. Responding to what they perceived as growing fascism in Germany and the rise of a global program of American imperialism, the RAF fought an urban war of resistance modeled on leftist insurgencies in Central America and ideologically based on Maoism. They fueled their efforts through bank robberies and carried out a number of surprisingly effective operations including freeing captured prisoners at a few key junctures. It's hard to believe they did as much as they did.

There are no obvious moral judgments in this film, just what happened. One thing I especially admire about this film is that in Germany it's apparently still possible to believe that people act as they do because of their beliefs, and not for psychological reasons.

If this sounds like the kind of movie you might enjoy, you probably will. Very high marks.

TO SEE, IF ONLY ONCE
Eurydice - She, So Beloved… An Installation by the Quay Brothers
The Quay Brothers Eurydice - She, So Beloved… is a new work commissioned to mark the four hundredth anniversary of Monteverdi’s Orfeo – the first opera ever produced. This tragic narrative tells of Orfeo gaining entry into the Underworld in an effort to bring his wife, Eurydice, back to the land of the living. Using the opera as a reference, the Quays chose to develop their response through the character of Eurydice which led them to Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem ‘Orpheus. Eurydice. Hermes.’ Rilke subtly inverts the myth by placing emphasis upon Eurydice’s state and suggests that within the Underworld she has become a ‘treasure’, a ‘sweet fruit of darkness’, implying she would rather stay with Death than return to life.
The dramatic nature of the myth unfolds in a three-part installation – a film ballet (choreographed by Kim Brandstrup) connects to an optical box via an anamorphic painting. It is appropriate that the Quays combine dance with film, animation and painting to form a coherent whole, for opera itself brings together emotive lyric with voice, music, performance and stage. In addition to this, the visual devices are essential elements of any work produced by the Quays, implying that She, So Beloved… functions as both a celebratory commission and an extension of the Brothersongoing practice: the optical box is another manifestation of the Bachelor Boxes or the arcane mechanical devices that frequent their films. The anamorphic image continues their preoccupation with such image distorting effects whilst the elegantly choreographed movements of Eurydice(played by dancer Zenaida Yanowsky) correlates to the movements made by so many of the Quays’ puppets. These connections open up deeper and more fertile grounds for interpretation, and suggest that the installation can be seen as a further autueristic marker within the Quays oeuvre.

Of all the Quays films, She, So Beloved… visually links most with The Street of Crocodiles (1986) and Anamorphosis (1990) whilst in terms of narrative makes strong connections to their second live-action film The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes (2005): within this narrative, opera singer Malvina Van Stille seemingly slips into a death-like state during a performance and is taken away to a remote island by the diabolical Doctor Droz. There she remains, existing as a woman of immense beauty waiting to be woken. Droz later hires Filesberto, a piano tuner, to service the seven automata he has placed around his island. As Filesberto repairs these devices he becomes aware of Malvina and resolves to both awaken her from the trance and free her from Droz.

The Film Ballet

The protagonists of Earthquakes are reflected in those of Rilke’s poem - Orfeo is Filesberto; Eurydice is Malvina whilst Hermes is Droz. Eurydice and Malvina are both women of significant beauty who are inextricably bound to Opera but frozen in death whilst Orfeo and Filesberto can be considered to be interlopers for they are both characters who enter a mysterious and forbidden world in an effort to rescue a loved one. Filesberto is invited into this realm, whereas Orfeo must gain entry himself: having looked into the Underworld through a dirty pane of glass, he kneels at a small but ornate aperture and sings. So tragic is his song that he is granted entry by the Gods.

Within the Quays’ interpretation, the Underworld is, like the derelict Street of Crocodiles, an industrial space of sheathed scaffold; its covers loose and rippling in the wind. A dark, turgid river flows beneath while high above an animated crane reaches out into the darkness. Orfeo (baritone Simon Keenlyside, who also performs the beautiful and powerful accompanying soundtrack), stands amongst this wreckage and, looking down upon his bride, continues to sing. Eurydice lies all but still, her arm slowly rotating from the shoulder in a movement that recalls the deathly unwinding of the puppets in The Street of Crocodiles. It is as if she were clockwork, the mechanism slowly unwinding, the semblance of life breaking down into this one fractured movement. It is painful to watch for it is in some sense a betrayal – Eurydice may be revived by the emotion of the song but it may be for only the briefest of moments.

Until now the film has been presented in black and white but upon the stirring of Eurydice the film slips momentarily into muted colour. Life is made suddenly evident by these pale tones and Eurydice’s movements become more pronounced. She moves her head back and forth, gracefully shifting her body until Hermes (Kenneth Thrap), like Doctor Droz, steps out of the darkness and draws her back into her deathly state with a gentle touch of his hands. Undeterred, Orfeo continues his song as he works his way through this Underworld, eventually coming to rest at the side of his wife. There is silence and the couple touch. But this is Orfeo. Unable to resist their desires, Eurydice casts one final look upon her husband.

The Optical Box

The act of looking through and into is another repeated element within the Brothers work evident within this installation. Many of their characters – be that puppet of actor – involve themselves in the solitary and secret act of observation. Be it in an attempt to see the forbidden or to merely witness what lies outside, looking empowers these characters with new knowledge. Within the installation the viewer becomes complicit with this act for they are invited to look into the optical box via a series of peepholes where upon they see a version of the filmed Underworld. By looking into this space the viewer becomes character – Orfeo – for they mirror his acts of looking and see only what he has seen.

It is worth noting that the act of looking is compounded in the film’s concluding images: when Orfeo finally reaches Eurydice she reaches out and touches his hand. It is a tender moment, silent and still. Eurydice continues to caress him until her hand rests upon his cheek and then she turns, casting her gaze upon him. There is a piercing sound then only mist - in this Underworld the cost of looking upon the desired is death. This ending makes the implications of Rilke’s poem obvious as much echoing the many bleak endings of the Brothers films.

In typical Quay fashion, the film ends with elegant calligraphic credits – words not written or printed but carved and chipped, a font constructed in relation to the narrative itself. The credits momentarily stop and the audience are granted one more image of Eurydice: she lies still, swathed in black velvet. Her mouth briefly opens and we hear her speak with the voice of Death: a single caw of the crow comes from deep within her throat, a sharp crack sounding out in the darkness. It is a voice that confirms her death and one that binds her to this Underworld. An abrupt cut and the credits continue.

Physically the Optical Box, with its coffin-like shape and multiple peepholes, recalls the wooden boxes seen in The Street of Crocodiles andAnamorphosis as well as the broken automata of Earthquakes. Within each of these narratives, they present a clockwork moment, an instance of a narrative fractured from its surroundings. Movement is active within them, solitary moments and gestures that implicate or betray some sense of story or emotion. Within She, So Beloved… the mechanism has long unwound and the moments contained within this funerary are locked in time. As the Quays’ themselves state in reference to Rilke’s poem (`She had become all root`), within this box Eurydice has “taken root” in death and we see her likeness and beauty depicted within a static puppet made of gnarled branch and bark. She is simultaneously dead and alive, organic and frozen.

The Anamorphic Image

Throughout the Quays’ work there is always some sense of visual disturbance within the image, either through optic effects such as shallow focal planes or soft focus through to the more extreme disruption through anamorphosis: here the image is distorted through altering the lines of perspective which can only be rectified by viewing the image from a certain angle. So preoccupied with this visual quality, the Quays accepted a commission to make a short animated film, Anamorphosis, concerning the historic use of the technique for The Program for Art on Film.

Within She, So Beloved… the viewer is required to look through one of the smaller peepholes embedded within the optical box in order to correctly perceive the distorted image on the far wall - Orfeo playing his lyre. The painting acts as both a physical and symbolic device which connects the two depictions of the Underworld and reinforces the relationship between Orfeo and the viewer – he sang to gain entry into the Underworld whereas the viewer gains their entry through their enquiring gaze.

Throughout their growing body of work the Quays have often adapted existing works (The Street of Crocodiles is based upon Bruno Schulz’s book of the same name) or taken influence from a diverse range of literary sources and infused it with their own narratives (as with Earthquakes whose influences range from Roussel’s Locus Solus to Casares’s The Invention of Morel) in order to structure their imagery. Although this interpretation, a response to and adaptation of an opera, continues this trend the very nature of the commission and source material has created something wholly unique within the Quays’ oeuvre. It is a work in which the viewer may fully interact with as opposed to merely view. For once, and perhaps at last, the audience can physically enter the space in which the Quays’ imagination occupies. And that, like all their work, is a moment of immense but terrible beauty.

Eurydice - She, So Beloved... has been commissioned by Opera North Projects and Capture in association with Leeds Art Gallery and The Culture Company. The installation opened on 12th October at Leeds Art Gallery and ran until 20th January 2008.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455824/

Trivia:

* Russell Crowe was attached as the lead during pre-production. 20th Century Fox executives wanted to reduce Crowe's salary considerably, in order to appease the film's budget. This decision compelled him to ultimately leave the project.

* Over 1500 wild horses were used for this movie

* It took nine months to finish the movie's principal photography.

* No fewer than 15 babies were born to cast and crew, one being Kidman's daughter, during the course of the very long filming.

* Even though the filming schedule was pushed back a half year, Nicole Kidman never lost her faith in the project and instead prepared for the role, by touring the country with her family, riding horses and even castrating bulls.

* Filming took nine months, plus some re-shoots in late 2008.

* Heath Ledger was originally cast, but backed out to do The Dark Knight (2008):

* Nicole Kidman revealed that she agreed to star in the film without reading the script. Hugh Jackman stated in an interview for "60 Minutes", which aired on Sunday the 16th of October 2008, that Nicole told Hugh he had to be in the movie at a Super Bowl party, and when Hugh told her he didn't even have a script Nicole told him to forget the script, because Baz Luhrmann was directing.

* The film sees Hong Kong actor and stuntman Wah Yuen make his official English language debut. Yuen, a classmate of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, has played the villain in such Hong Kong classics as Fei lung mang jeung (1988) and Dung fong tuk ying (1987), and is probably best known internationally for his role as the Landlord in Kung fu (2004).

* The film's AUD$100M budget reportedly increased to more than AUD$150M.

* Stock footage from Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) was used for the Japanese attack

First things first... the less you know going in, the more you will be rewarded.

DON'T READ OR WATCH ANYTHING if you plan to see the film. INCLUDING THIS.

Secondly, I loved it. I dare say it was my favorite film of the year so far. The way the story unfolds is a marvelous slight of hand where time and space aren't always what they seem and you actually have to pay attention, and think about where you are. It's never confusing, but you are rewarded for keeping up with the story.

Third, it's dark. These are broken men, true anti-heroes who often do things that are mean-spirited and potentially evil due to their obsessions with each other. Often I don't like when the main characters are this dark, but here it was different. They reminded me of the broken heros of the 1970s when doing good meant being bad at the same time. This will work for some and not for others (my fiancee hated the film for this very reason).

Fourth, what a great cast in great locations doing amazing things. And the way that tricks are revealed and then turn back on them is fun to watch.

Fifth, Nikola Tesla was a real person. He did have a rivalry with Edison. He did create marvelous lightning machines. He could not transport people. You'll either go with it or not.

This is an intelligent, supernatural thriller that rewards patience. If you like magic at all, you should definietly check out The Prestige. It's not for everyone, but for me it was.

NEW YORK (AP) — A spokeswoman for John Hughes says the director of 1980s coming-of-age films like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" has died in Manhattan.

Michelle Bega says the 59-year-old Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk. He was in Manhattan to visit family.

He made a teen star of Molly Ringwald with 1984's "Sixteen Candles" about a girl's nightmarish birthday on the eve of her sister's wedding.

Ringwald also starred in "The Breakfast Club," about a group of high school misfits during Saturday detention, and "Pretty in Pink."

Hughes also directed "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and wrote "Home Alone." He lived in Illinois and set many of his films in the Chicago area.
